abominable practices of the occasion were part of the Babylonian ceremonies of the mystery religion, of which Belshazzar was head over at that time. “They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone” (Dan. 5:4). Adding to the blasphemy of the occasion, they drank their wine from the Holy Vessels of the Lord. The mixing of the Holy Vessels used in heathen worship brought God’s swift judgment upon Belshazzar.
